Marty's Story
Life
I was born in NYC and lived in Ridgewood, Queens, until 1967. I graduated from St. Matthias School in 1967 and started attending St. Joseph's HS in Brooklyn. My family moved to Greenwich, CT, in the Fall of '67 and I thought I'd been dropped in the middle of the boonies. Greenwich at that time was not the Greenwich it has become today. Since my parents gave me the option of choosing schools; public, private, or parochial, after 13 years in parochial schools, I chose public and graduated 9th grade from Eastern Jr. High and Greenwich HS in '71. I attended college fulltime for a while to study nursing but realized it wasn't for me. So, I went to Berkeley Secretarial School to get a real skill that paid money, went to work at GTE, and attended college part time until I moved to VT in '78.
Since 1978, I've been living in the Burlington, VT, area and working for IBM. I've got 2 great sons, 21 and 18, and have been divorced for the past four years. I'm enjoying being on my own again after 23 years of marriage.
I've been working for IBM, mostly in IT. I've had the opportunity to learn many things and have been fortunate to move around to numerous positions; starting as a substrate designer, then moving on to applications programming, MVS systems programming and eventually on to account management, project management specifically handling commercial accounts that outsource to IBM, and people management.

and feel very fortunate that I had that choice already back then since my boys never had to be 'latch-key' kids. Other than business trips, I was always home when they returned from school and during vacations.
With the kids growing older, I'm starting to look forward to actually retiring from work in the next 5 to 7 years; although I can't actually imagine myself sitting on the porch in a rocker. I'm looking forward to being able to devote more time to my current hobbies; quilting, gardening, reading, travelling, as well as returning to some of my older hobbies that I haven't had time for like drawing, painting, and music. There are also many other things I'd like to learn about as well as get active in so I can see myself returning to school at some point to take advantage of some of the great courses offered at the colleges around Burlington.
Living here I've learned to squeeze every minute of enjoyment out of the few short months (feels like weeks some years) of summer. Winters here make you stronger. An early morning walk after a fresh snowfall in January or February helps you appreciate the stark beauty of nature and the soothing warmth of a woodstove upon returning indoors.
Although I have had the opportunity to travel to many places in the world and across the US, I am always happy to return home to VT. I fell in love with it back in 1978 and imagine that, even if I move away at some point, I will always spend some time here each year.
